We start with the artist. We build our projects from the artist up, allowing these professionals to develop their craft in new ways and to grow their careers in San Diego theatre and beyond.

Chalk Circle Collective empowers artists to take ownership of the theatrical experience by providing a safe space to collaborate, to risk, and to innovate.

We unite artists with diverse audiences so our community can be seen, heard, and challenged together.

NOW is the best time to create and innovate! An artist’s work is never done so Chalk Circle Collective hopes to find opportunities to further connect with the San Diego Theatre Community. That could be anything from full productions, to The Chalkboard projects, to artist engagement, and perhaps more.

Chalk Circle Collective is committed to investing in the already thriving San Diego theatre community. We will continue our mission with the focus on local artists and audiences. Local artists will make up our Collective. They can take their new skills and funnel that talent right back into the city. We take pride in our city and the incredible artists, donors, and audiences alike.

We start with the artist

What does this mean? We are flipping the model! The traditional theatre model as we know it is built around creating a season of plays that artists can (hopefully) fit into. As a business model the artists are thought of last. So.. we are flipping that idea. The artist leads with what they feel passionate about and Chalk Circle Collective builds around that inspiration with innovation and collaboration.

Given the space to try something new and take ownership of their process, our artists will expand their skillset and grow their career throughout San Diego and further. Chalk Circle Alumni will shape the future of San Diego theatre.

Donors will see the impact that their sponsorship had on an artists career as Chalk Circle provides growth updates on those artists. What new door was opened thanks to the experience the artist gained in the Chalk Circle?

With transparency and access to the process, our audiences will engage in a new way with both the art and the artist.

  • Start with the artist by giving collaborators a sense of true ownership over their creative process in order to unlock their full potential.

  • Be transparent by leading with honesty and accountability and allowing audiences into our creative process.

  • Increase access to live entertainment by growing relationships with diverse audiences and by giving new opportunities to passionate creatives.

  • Invite and inspire audiences to find and express what is valuable in them by sharing what is valuable in us.

We are excited about establishing a diverse advisory board that will best define, elevate, and hold our collective accountable to evolving standards in EDI long-term. The board will be paired with an artists council to bring a new perspective in keeping with our artist-first mission, planned to launch in 2024. We are dedicated to a system designed for continuous improvement in recognition of EDI will have a lasting impact.
